About CA Foundation
The Foundation Examination is the first examination of the chartered accountancy course of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, under the New Scheme of Education and Training. ICAI's guidance notes for January 2027 describe it as a descriptive cum objective examination of 400 marks in four papers, held three times a year, in January, May and September. A candidate must be registered in the Foundation Course with the Board of Studies by the cut-off date (1 September 2026 for January 2027) and must have appeared in, or passed, the Class 12 board examination. Graduates and postgraduates with the marks set by ICAI, and those who have passed the Intermediate examination of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India or the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, may enter the Intermediate course directly without the Foundation.
The four papers are on separate days. Paper 1 Accounting and Paper 2 Business Laws are 3-hour written papers of 100 marks, with 15 minutes of advance reading time; in the September 2026 booklets each has six questions, Question 1 compulsory and any four of the remaining five to be answered. Paper 3 Quantitative Aptitude (Business Mathematics 40 marks, Logical Reasoning 20 marks, Statistics 40 marks) and Paper 4 Business Economics are 2-hour objective papers with no reading time. Each objective booklet holds 100 questions with four options, answered on an OMR sheet in HB pencil. A right answer earns 1 mark, a wrong answer loses one quarter of a mark, and two darkened circles count as a wrong answer. A battery calculator of up to 6 functions, 12 digits and two memories is allowed; a scientific calculator is not.
For January 2027 the papers are on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027, 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM (Papers 1 and 2) and 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM (Papers 3 and 4) Indian time. The online form at eservices.icai.org opens on 3 November 2026 and closes on 16 November 2026 without late fee and 19 November 2026 with it, and the correction window for centre and medium is 20 to 22 November 2026. The fee is ₹1,500 for a centre in India, ₹2,200 for Kathmandu and US$325 for Bahrain and Dubai, with a late fee of ₹600 (US$10 abroad). The result is expected in March 2027.
A candidate may write in English or Hindi, chosen on the form. Paper 1 is printed in English for everyone, though Hindi-medium candidates may answer in Hindi. Papers 2, 3 and 4 are printed in English for English-medium candidates and in both languages for Hindi-medium candidates; the OMR sheets of Papers 3 and 4 are in English only. To pass, a candidate needs at least 40 marks in each paper and at least 50% of the 400 marks in aggregate, in one sitting; 70% in aggregate is a pass with distinction. There is no exemption in individual papers. This practice set builds Papers 3 and 4 as two separately timed papers of 100 questions in English and Hindi. Papers 1 and 2 are described here but not written out, because they are long written answers marked by examiners.
