About CMA Foundation

The Institute of Cost Accountants of India conducts the Foundation examination, the first of the three levels of the CMA course (Foundation, Intermediate, Final). It is held twice a year, in the June and December terms. The current papers follow Syllabus 2022.

Syllabus 2022 has four Foundation papers of 100 marks each: Paper 1, Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication; Paper 2, Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting; Paper 3, Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics; and Paper 4, Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management. The syllabus gives each paper's section weights, for example Business Laws 80% and Business Communication 20% in Paper 1.

The time table for the December 2026 Foundation examination says that every paper is multiple choice, with 50 questions of 2 marks each. The papers are sat in two sessions on one day. Papers 1 and 2 run from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Papers 3 and 4 run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. So each session is 100 questions and 200 marks in two hours. The examination is offline, on an OMR sheet at a centre, and the notice says there is no negative marking.

The ICMAI prospectus says a Foundation candidate passes with at least 40% in each paper and 50% of the total marks. Exemptions and carry-forward of marks are not available at Foundation. The December 2026 examination is on Sunday, 13 December 2026, and the result is due by 7 January 2027, according to the time table.
